All-Inclusive or Non–All-Inclusive: That Is the Question

A hammock in Mexico, a perfect place to relax!

So, you’ve decided to go on vacation—yay! Maybe you even have your flights booked. Now it’s time to choose your hotel. Depending on where you’re headed, there may be an abundance of all-inclusive resorts (I’m looking at you, Cancun). So… is an all-inclusive hotel right for you? Or is a place where you can come and go freely (with a little more planning) more your style?

Start by asking yourself a few questions about how you and your travel companions like to travel and what you’re hoping to get out of this trip. Are you looking to immerse yourself in a new culture, or do you want to spend most of your time lounging by the beach or pool? Do you love the idea of eating and drinking without constantly reaching for your wallet, or do you prefer exploring and dining where the locals eat?

There are pros and cons to everything in life, and that includes hotel styles. Hopefully, this will help you narrow down what kind of stay will best fit your travel vibe.

An All-Inclusive Resort May Be Right for You If You:

  • Want to lounge your troubles away. You work hard and just need a break. Picture yourself sunbathing on the beach, good book in hand, drink nearby, with very few responsibilities for the duration of your vacation.

  • Plan to spend most of your time at the resort. I mean, why leave when there’s a beach, a pool, unlimited food, and drinks galore?

  • Want to leave your wallet at home. All-inclusive resorts typically charge a set price per person that covers your room, food, drinks (yes, alcohol included), and often extra perks like activities and sometimes airport transportation.

  • Are comfortable going on excursions with other resort guests. Many resorts offer activities such as catamaran cruises or trips to nearby attractions, usually shared with a group of fellow guests.

  • Are traveling to a tropical destination. More often than not, you’ll find all-inclusive resorts set on stunning beaches—especially in places like the Caribbean and Mexico, which have no shortage of options.

  • Want a quieter vacation with fewer crying, splashing, screaming kids. Some all-inclusive resorts are adults-only, and those that aren’t often include adults-only sections.

  • Like knowing exactly what to expect. With a handful of on-site restaurants, advance reservations, and a predictable daily rhythm, everything is planned and ready for you.

A Non–All-Inclusive Resort May Be Best for You If You:

  • Want to lounge, but only part of the time. You still enjoy sunbathing on the beach, reading a good book, and sipping a drink, just not every single day of your trip.

  • Want to immerse yourself in the country’s culture and tourism opportunities. You’re excited to explore beyond the resort and experience the destination itself.

  • Like to come and go as you please, creating your own plans and setting your own timetable. No reservations required (unless you want them!).

  • Want to eat where the locals eat and do what the locals do. Street food, hidden gems, and neighborhood favorites are part of the adventure.

  • Value flexibility. You enjoy deciding each day what you want to do, see, and eat—sometimes on a whim.

  • Are interested in adventure or exploring on your own. Whether it’s renting a car, hopping on public transportation, or wandering on foot, discovery is part of the fun.

  • Like to switch things up and try new experiences often. Variety keeps your vacation exciting and fresh.

So… Which One Is Right for You?

An all-inclusive resort is perfect if your idea of a great vacation means total relaxation, minimal decision-making, and knowing most of your expenses are covered before you even arrive. It’s a true “turn your brain off” kind of trip.

On the other hand, a non–all-inclusive stay may be your ideal match if you love flexibility, exploration, and immersing yourself in local culture. If trying new restaurants, wandering through neighborhoods, and creating your own daily adventure sounds exciting, this style of travel might be calling your name.

Whichever you choose—and however you like to travel—you really can have it all (fruity cocktail in hand 🍹). There’s no right or wrong option, just the one that works best for you and your travel companions. So… no stress, right? You’re going on vacation! Have an absolute blast!

We stayed at an all-inclusive resort for the first time on our trip to Mexico and learned that this style of travel isn’t quite our vibe. That said, we still had a great time and found ways to explore and experience a bit of Mexico beyond the resort.
